Module 1: Computer Basics
Identify what a computer is and does, then specify a complete machine for a defined purpose and budget.
What You'll Learn
- The components of a computer and the input-process-output-storage model
- The difference between hardware and software, and between RAM and storage
- How each component affects performance for a given workload
- How to specify a workstation from the job it must do, within a budget
Real-World Scenario
Before you can reason about where computing happens in the cloud, you need a clear picture of where it happens on the machine in front of you. The cloud is not magic — it is somebody else's computers, in a building, running the same components sitting on your desk. Lakeside is also replacing four workstations at $900 each, and someone has to specify them.
Lessons
Complete each lesson in order. Watch the video, review the notes, and finish the challenge.
What a Computer Is and What It Does
Identify the components of a computer, distinguish hardware from software, and understand the input-process-output model everything else is built on.
Building a Virtual Computer
Specify a complete computer for a defined purpose and budget, and defend every component choice.
